Bar at Times Square
New York-New York 3790 Las Vegas Blvd. S. 702-740-6969 website Open 24 Hours No Cover Dueling pianos turn this small bar just off the casino at New York-New York into a rollicking party joint on a nightly basis. It's usually packed and usually a boisterous good time.

The hip New York and LA hot spot comes to Downtown Las Vegas, offering a kitschy theme (the place is done like an old beauty parlor) and plenty of rock solid drinks and entertainment. It seems to draw a younger audience but not necessarily a "hipster" type - you're more likely to hear people discussing Jon Stewart than Paris Hilton.

There are roughly 3-dozen television screens throughout this restaurant/bar allowing even the most die-hard of sports fans to find something entertaining to watch. They also serve a full menu of American grill type food.

Located outside the main entrance to Harrah's, this entertainment venue is part performance space (live bands play often), part shopping mall, part festival, and part bar complete with flair bartenders and dancing later at nights. Definitely a party spot!

This very popular English pub is a great place to hoist a Guinness and cheer the soccer game with your mates. Or it's a great place to have a beer with some pals, whichever you prefer. Loud but friendly (mostly locals) crowd and a wide-ranging beer selection that is very popular in these parts.

Definitely not a place for the faint of heart, the Double Down may not be as "dive bar" as it looks but it does a very realistic imitation of one. Great local bands (skewing toward punk and ska), lots of locals of the goth and punk set, and one basic rule posted so everyone can see: "You puke, you clean it up."

Primarily a restaurant and glorified video arcade, ESPN also offers a fully-stocked bar with plenty of television screens scattered around to help you catch whatever big game you might be interested in catching.

One of the keys to the hoped-for resurgence of Downtown Las Vegas has been places like The Griffin, a small but entertaining bar located in the newly spiffed up East Fremont Street district. This six block long stretch of the main Downtown drag is mere steps from the Fremont Street Experience and all of the hotels and casinos on Glitter Gulch, but it has a unique new vibe with jazzy neon signs, wide sidewalks, landscaping, and an air of promise driven by bars like this.
The Griffin is one of those places that has managed to generate its own mystique in Vegas. The motif is vaguely castle-esque, with stony outcroppings, a heavily carved bar, and a couple of fire pits worthy of roasting mutton over. Deep plushy booths and other low-slung seating provide an almost ultra-lounge feel but in a good way - instead of the pretentious airs such places can engender, this seems to offer a place for lounging, relaxing, and conversation, intimate or otherwise.
It's a small space so there is no stage or dance floor, but a jukebox (and occasionally a DJ) provide the audio atmospherics with a deep play list that should satisfy just about any musical taste.
The crowd is a mix of older and younger, heavy on the casino industry insiders and locals. Word has it that this is the place a lot of the performers in shows on The Strip hang out after the final curtain and that you may even seen a bazillionaire casino owner or two mixing and mingling on occasion. It's hip without trying and friendly in a way that would not exist if this place were located in one of the big hotels.
Mixed with the nearby Beauty Bar and Downtown Cocktail Lounge (plus other upcoming bars and honky tonks planned for the vicinity) this is a great place to go and unwind without needing to worry about some outrageous cover charge or drink prices or pressure to wear the latest and hottest clothes. No standing and posing allowed.

Even though there is a Coyote Ugly branded bar in town (and elsewhere), the New York City version of Hogs & Heifers was the actual inspiration for the film. A rowdy roadhouse of a joint that isn't as threatening as it may appear (yes, those are actual bikers but they aren't going to bother you unless you bother them first).

This legendary Vegas hotspot moved to a new location a couple of years ago at the southernmost end of The Strip but is still popular among locals and tourists. Monday nights offers a karaoke that often draws local (and sometimes national) celebrities (Sheena Easton and Clint Holmes are semi-regulars) while Friday and Saturday offers local entertainment and sing-a-longs that will evoke wonderful memories of the Rat Pack era.

The decor is brew-pub typical (exposed brick, metal, wood) but the beer and the accompanying pub grub are better than average, plus weekend nights offer live entertainment and dancing. A fun place without attitude.

A warm, clubby environment with plenty of cushy seating makes this an inviting place to have a cocktail, but throw in the deuling piano players as entertainment (not available all nights, call ahead) and it becomes a sing-a-long party place. Warning, the drinks are not cheap here.

If you ever see a Vegas movie where they have a scene that takes place in a dark, moody lounge atmosphere, it may have been filmed here. A firepit, cocktail waitresses in slinky dresses, and a vibe straight out of a Rat Pack movie make this a fun (in an ironic sort of way) place to visit.

After closing briefly in 2005, the Sand Dollar was reopened with a fresh coat of paint and a fresh attitude but still holds onto it's old appeal, namely hosting some of the best live music (nightly!) in town. The blues bands that play here are not usually household names but if you're a fan of the genre you'll have a great time. Worth noting to people who may have visited in the past: they have cleaned up the place and the clientele so it's now a much safer joint to visit.

The official name of this place is Hootie & the Blowfish's Shady Grove Lounge and although you'll usually just see their memorabilia hanging around you may also catch one of the band members kicking back with a drink. It's a fun and funky space with lots of games (foosball, billiards, mini-bowling) all done up like a retro-kitsch trailer park.

As a part of "The Block," a street-long series of clubs and restaurants, the sidebar is nowhere near as flashy as places like Hogs & Heifers nearby. But that's part of it's appeal. It's a glorified cocktail lounge serving elegant (and often expensive) drinks with big windows offering a great view of the Downtown neon. Perfect for a nightcap or a pre-show libation.

It's hard to beat the views from the top of the 1,000 foot Stratosphere Tower and this intimate lounge can get you right up close to the windows. Live entertainment is offered most nights and the drinks, while pricey, are wide-ranging and well-prepared.
A terrific restaurant and a great mix of award-winning beers in a traditional brew-pub environment make this one a winner. Note the operating hours - this is a great place for a refuel if you've been out partying all night and aren't quite ready to go crash yet.
