Christina Aguilera: The Xperience
At a Glance
What is it?
A headlining show from pop superstar Christina Aguilera.
Where is it?
In the Zappos Theater in Planet Hollywood on the Center Strip.
Is it worth the cost?
There are very few singers out there as good, vocally, as she is, so I say yes.
Why should I see this show?
Because Christina remains one of the best pop vocalists on the planet.
What else do I need to know?
She walks through the audience during Lady Marmalade – have your camera ready.
What’s the bottom line?
A dazzling production from one of the best singers in the world.
Because she falls into the category of “pop star,” Christina Aguilera is often dismissed by critics who consider anything “pop” to be intrinsically less worthy of acclaim. I would argue that she is probably one of the best vocalists on the planet and if you need proof of that, go see her show in Las Vegas.
Joining such megastars as Janet Jackson and Lady Gaga Aguilera’s residency at Planet Hollywood is another one of those big-budget, high spectacle productions with flashy sets, wild costumes, and a small army of backup dancers to keep the energy going. But unlike many other Vegas headliners – hell, like many other performers period – Xtina doesn’t lip sync or sing “live to track” (singing but while a full recording is playing as well). No, she sings live and is able to do things vocally that are mind bending.
All of the hits and a lot of the deeper cuts are here – Dirrty, What a Girl Wants, Beautiful, Fighter, and Genie in a Bottle are among the most popular cuts and she blasts through them sounding just as good as when they came out a couple of decades ago.
Yes, it’s been twenty years since Genie in a Bottle. Accept it and move on with your life.
The staging isn’t quite as eye-popping as I’ve seen at other shows, which I think is because here you don’t need to be distracted by all that to make you not pay as close attention to the singing. Some people argue say that the never ending runs and growls can be distracting, showy affectations but they are hallmarks of popular music and you also just need to accept that.
Listen to her stunning, heart-rending delivery on Say Something or Beautiful and you probably won’t have any problems with acceptance. Just be prepared to say to the person sitting next you (as I did), “I’m not crying. You’re crying.”
Throughout, she is friendly, chatty, and interactive with the fans, especially those in the GA pit down front and through the first few rows of the audience. A warning… during Lady Marmalade, she and the dancers make their way through the theater so don’t be like me, unable to get your camera working fast enough when she passes by three feet away.
Vegas has become a destination for big name singers, but rarely will you find one who actually sing as well as this one.
