Full Review

As part of the Station family of hotels that include Green Valley RanchTexas Station, and others, Sunset Station and its siblings aim their facilities after the locals market. It is located miles from The Strip in neighboring Henderson, and it’s not even within walking distance to the hotels on Boulder Highway, so you don’t get a lot of tourists here. That can be both good and bad, depending upon your point of view.

The look of the buildings is vaguely Victorian, Coney Island, turn-of-the-century San Francisco… oh, I don’t know what it is but it’s nice.

The casino has very high ceilings with colorful stained glass lights that help to cheer it up. Since this is a locals’ place, there are more video poker machines than slots (or at least it seems that way), plus a large bingo hall, keno, a poker room, a race and sports book, and more. Limits on everything are lower than you’ll find on The Strip so if you’re looking to stretch your gambling dollar, this is a good place in which to do it.

The rooms, which had been pretty basic for most of their life, got a nice upgrade in 2016. New furnishings and decor won’t win any awards but they are contemporary and much more stylish than before. Each includes hair dryers, wireless Internet, room service, and more.

There are lots of amusements here including several restaurants, a great (and enormously popular) buffet, a showroom, a 13-screen movie theater, a bowling alley, and an outdoor amphitheater. Service is top-notch and everyone I dealt with was incredibly friendly, except for one blackjack dealer who made me mad by lecturing me when I split two jacks. Okay, maybe it wasn’t the smartest move, but I had a gut instinct and I wound up winning both hands. So there, nyah.

Prices can go as low as $40 per night and usually don’t go a lot over $100, even on the weekends. If I need to tell you how good of a deal that is in Vegas, you haven’t been paying attention. There is a $25.07 per night resort fee added on top that includes Internet, fitness center access, and more.

The location is the only major drawback that I see with this place. You’ll have to get a rental car (which I recommend anyway) to get to the major tourist attractions on The Strip, or take a cab and pay a lot do so. There are things to do nearby including the Galleria at Sunset mall, sister hotel/casino Fiesta Henderson, lots of chain restaurants, and a water park, but most of the reasons you came to Vegas are many miles away.

Sunset Station will probably never be any tourist’s main destination but it is a great alternative if things on The Strip are too expensive and a fun side trip to see another side of Vegas.
